JMPRO Community Media Podcast - WNC Hurricane Helene Audio Storyline

Introducing the WNC Hurricane Helene Audio Storyline

Western North Carolina nonprofit JMPRO Community Media has launched the WNC Hurricane Helene Audio Storyline and podcast.

These stories, collected from an anonymous voicemail box, will be mixed for the podcast series. It’s purpose is to hear what people are saying and promote solidarity, build a qualitative account of the strengths and challenges of regional disaster response, let others know what it has been like for residents, and encourage long term support of the region.

Listeners of the WNC Health Policy Podcast may recognize the voice of WNC HPI Audio Producer Andrew Rainey narrating these episodes. In addition to his work for WNC HPI and the NC Center for Health and Wellness at UNC Asheville, Andrew also serves as Podcast Producer for JMPRO.

Episode 1 - Swannanoa Secondhand

The podcast’s first episode shares three messages from a resident in Swannanoa, one of the hardest-hit communities in WNC, describing her own and others’ experiences in the immediate aftermath of the storm.

Episode 1: Swannanoa Secondhand  (content warning: intense descriptions)

Be advised that this episode contains intense descriptions that may be upsetting to some listeners, including mentions of death and descriptions of rescue and recovery efforts. Please consider your capacity to engage with this material in a healthy way before listening.
